Each year at VAMFF, the Grand Showcase features one prominent Australian designer in a celebration of glitz, glamour and the kind of pomp we all love when it comes to fashion week. In 2015, Romance Was Born took over the NGV, complete with ballerinas, free champagne and a glittery finale. 2016 saw Dion Lee wow with sleek minimal designs and a laser show, and last year models strutted down a pink velvet runway for Camilla and Marc.
This year, Ginger & Smart presented their Fall/Winter 18 collection to a full house. There was a giant mirror prism at the end of the runway (see above photo) and a cocktail of garments that ranged from plum sequined dresses to fluffy pink and white bridal gowns, blue power suits and even a middle-eastern inspired streetwear section.
By a complete fluke, and even to my own surprise, SOMEHOW I managed to go from shooting the runway for a bit of fun to actually photographing the show for Ginger and Smart. Daunting is a word I'll slide in here to describe what it was like talking to the designers and getting briefed a mere ten minutes before the show began. I jumped on the riser to capture the front end of the show, and Guillaume went backstage (I literally threw him in the deep end) to candidly capture everything going on back of house.
Below are not only some of my favourite outfits from the show, but some of my favourite runway photos, period. I hope you love them as much as I do...
PS. Backstage pics shot by Guillaume coming tomorrow morning!
