This fascination started twelve months ago. I had just returned from an overseas trip and my friend, Jack linked me to an album. The melodies washed over me, like the waves I had been floating in just days prior. I'm not sure what it was, the sexy brass instruments, the distorted vocals, the way that everything seemed the same on the surface, but the more you listened the more you learned how different everything was.
And thus, an obsession was born. Partly fuelled by Jack and his work delving into this aesthetic, as well as his suggestions for films such as Only God Forgives, shows like Mr Robot and albums like GENERATIONWHY by Zhu.
Over the past year, I've explored this both through my own studies (which will probably never see the light of day), in collaboration with other people (see this post here), and now, culminating it all in this photo shoot that I shot a couple of months ago with Matthew, who brought a ridiculous amount of enthusiasm to the shoot and downed a post-dinner shot of 7/11 Coffee.
I've always wanted to photograph/film something based off a song or album that particularly resonated with me. I have several self-portraits floating around in my head based on songs by the likes of Lana Del Rey, for example. In fact, in 2010 I even story-boarded a short film set to 5 Years Time by Noah and the Whale. It never eventuated. So the fact that I actually pulled this one out from my head and into the world makes me so deliriously happy.
As always, feel free to let me know what you think/leave feedback/comment whatever you want!
